Comment-only follow-ups from the #976/#977 review (REN-21 / REN-22). No object changes at all.
What changed and why
#
Change
Why
1
Reframe the CNP paragraph in probes-blackbox.yaml
The conclusion was right, the reasoning was not. cnp-cross-namespace-allow-apps-gatus-to-monitored-servicesdoes apply to blackbox-exporter — its Generalization section names it. We are safe because the allow it demands is already present, not because the note is "about gatus". The old wording is the sentence that makes the next person skip the check for the next namespace.
2
Record the egress dependency
The load-bearing fact was written down nowhere. Cilium enforces at both ends; the destination ingress allow is worthless if the prober is in egress enforcement. It is not — no policy selecting a monitoring endpoint declares an egress: block.
3
Extend the 200-vs-3xx caveat to all three new targets
#977 admitted it for paperless; #976 did not, and the gap is identical.
4
Record the tested revert recipe for #976 in the file
It was only in the merge commit message.
5
Correct the stale "needs a CiliumNetworkPolicy first" claim in apps/gatus/configmap.yaml
#977's whole justification is that that comment is wrong, and #977 left it in place for the next reader to re-derive the phantom requirement from.
The egress claim, verified
Enumerated every Cilium policy in the repo at 0a82d61f (js-yaml, spec + specs):
the single CiliumClusterwideNetworkPolicy (allow-cilium-health-connectivity) is scoped to reserved.health, so it cannot select a pod
An endpoint enters egress enforcement only once some policy selecting it declares egress:. None does, so blackbox-exporter may send. If a routine hardening pass ever adds an egress block to monitoring, the three cross-namespace targets go red while the *.monitoring.svc ones keep working — that is what the new paragraph exists to catch.
Item 5 is written in the header, not in place — deliberately
The stale sentence in apps/gatus/configmap.yaml sits inside the config.yaml: | block scalar (the scalar starts at :34), so it is ConfigMap data. gatus/deployment.yaml:13 carries configmap.reloader.stakater.com/reload: gatus-config, and Stakater Reloader is deployed (infrastructure/reloader/). Editing that comment in place would therefore roll the gatus Deployment — a production restart to fix a comment.
So the correction is written in the manifest header above data:, where it is inert. sha256(data["config.yaml"]) is 8886ef21… before and after.
If you would rather have it fixed in place, that is a gatus restart and it needs Zeus, not this PR.
Verification — repo only, and it is complete for what this PR claims
This PR claims exactly one thing — that it changes no object — and that is fully verified:
probes-blackbox.yaml: all 3 parsed documents deep-equal to master, blackbox-http still 20 targets
git diff -U0 filtered to non-comment, non-blank lines: 0 lines
I still have no Prometheus read path, so the REN-21 bar (a real 200, and red while the gate is up) is untouched by this PR and stays owed.
Production constraint
Nothing is applied, restarted or re-rendered. No workload, namespace, policy or probe target is touched. Flux re-renders both files on its next 10m sync into byte-identical objects, so there is no rollout at either end.
Revert
git revert -m 1 <merge-sha> — clean, single file pair, nothing else has landed on either file.
Either file alone: git checkout 0a82d61f -- <path>.
Note on scope
Two files in two namespaces, which normally means two PRs. Kept as one because item 5's correction and the pointer to it in probes-blackbox.yaml are a single statement — split, the first half would land asserting something the second half had not yet made true. Both files are provably inert, so neither carries a revertible behaviour of its own.
Update — 9142b78a, after the bd8690eb review
One sentence, one file, comment-only. Item 4's recipe ended with a claim this PR itself falsified:
The paperless block below DOES revert cleanly on its own with git revert -m 1 0a82d61f.
True at 0a82d61f, false at bd8690eb — this PR edits the paperless block, so the revert now collides with it. Reproduced independently before changing anything:
The new wording is the reviewer's, and it is verified true at the commit it ships in, not just at the old base. From 9142b78a, git revert -m 1 0a82d61f gives one conflict region — <<<<<<< HEAD at 157 through >>>>>>> at 200, other side 0 lines — and resolving it by taking the deletion removes exactly one target:
apps/gatus/configmap.yaml is not touched by this commit at all — git diff bd8690eb..9142b78a is one file, one hunk, five comment lines. status.renner.uno does not roll: ConfigMap data is unchanged, so configmap.reloader.stakater.com/reload has nothing to act on.
Not done, deliberately
The non-blocking suggestion to add a half-clause noting that the targets' own egress: blocks never touch the probe reply (Cilium is stateful) is not in this push. The card scoping it said correct that one sentence and change nothing else, and that clause belongs to the EGRESS paragraph, which this push does not touch. It is worth having — say the word and it goes in its own commit, same inert profile.
Revert of this commit alone
git revert 9142b78a — restores the previous sentence and nothing else.
Comment-only follow-ups from the [#976](https://gitea.renner.uno/k.renner/homelab/pulls/976)/[#977](https://gitea.renner.uno/k.renner/homelab/pulls/977) review (REN-21 / REN-22). **No object changes at all.**
## What changed and why
| # | Change | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Reframe the CNP paragraph in `probes-blackbox.yaml` | The conclusion was right, the reasoning was not. `cnp-cross-namespace-allow-apps-gatus-to-monitored-services` **does** apply to blackbox-exporter — its *Generalization* section names it. We are safe because the allow it demands is **already present**, not because the note is "about gatus". The old wording is the sentence that makes the next person skip the check for the next namespace. |
| 2 | Record the **egress** dependency | The load-bearing fact was written down nowhere. Cilium enforces at both ends; the destination ingress allow is worthless if the prober is in egress enforcement. It is not — no policy selecting a `monitoring` endpoint declares an `egress:` block. |
| 3 | Extend the 200-vs-3xx caveat to **all three** new targets | `#977` admitted it for paperless; `#976` did not, and the gap is identical. |
| 4 | Record the tested revert recipe for `#976` in the file | It was only in the merge commit message. |
| 5 | Correct the stale "needs a CiliumNetworkPolicy first" claim in `apps/gatus/configmap.yaml` | `#977`'s whole justification is that that comment is wrong, and `#977` left it in place for the next reader to re-derive the phantom requirement from. |
## The egress claim, verified
Enumerated every Cilium policy in the repo at `0a82d61f` (js-yaml, `spec` + `specs`):
- **73** `CiliumNetworkPolicy` / `CiliumClusterwideNetworkPolicy` objects
- **38** declare an `egress:` block, across **17** namespaces
- **0** of them are in the `monitoring` namespace
- the single `CiliumClusterwideNetworkPolicy` (`allow-cilium-health-connectivity`) is scoped to `reserved.health`, so it cannot select a pod
An endpoint enters egress enforcement only once some policy selecting it declares `egress:`. None does, so blackbox-exporter may send. If a routine hardening pass ever adds an egress block to `monitoring`, the three cross-namespace targets go red while the `*.monitoring.svc` ones keep working — that is what the new paragraph exists to catch.
## Item 5 is written in the header, not in place — deliberately
The stale sentence in `apps/gatus/configmap.yaml` sits **inside** the `config.yaml: |` block scalar (the scalar starts at `:34`), so it is ConfigMap **data**. `gatus/deployment.yaml:13` carries `configmap.reloader.stakater.com/reload: gatus-config`, and Stakater Reloader is deployed (`infrastructure/reloader/`). Editing that comment in place would therefore **roll the gatus Deployment — a production restart to fix a comment.**
So the correction is written in the manifest header above `data:`, where it is inert. `sha256(data["config.yaml"])` is `8886ef21…` before and after.
If you would rather have it fixed in place, that is a gatus restart and it needs Zeus, not this PR.
## Verification — repo only, and it is complete for what this PR claims
This PR claims exactly one thing — that it changes no object — and that is fully verified:
- `probes-blackbox.yaml`: all 3 parsed documents deep-equal to `master`, `blackbox-http` still **20** targets
- `gatus/configmap.yaml`: parsed object deep-equal, `data["config.yaml"]` byte-identical
- `git diff -U0` filtered to non-comment, non-blank lines: **0 lines**
I still have no Prometheus read path, so the REN-21 bar (a real 200, and red while the gate is up) is untouched by this PR and stays owed.
## Production constraint
Nothing is applied, restarted or re-rendered. No workload, namespace, policy or probe target is touched. Flux re-renders both files on its next 10m sync into byte-identical objects, so there is no rollout at either end.
## Revert

Kept as one because item 5's correction and the pointer to it in `probes-blackbox.yaml` are a single statement — split, the first half would land asserting something the second half had not yet made true. ## Update — `9142b78a`, after the `bd8690eb` review
One sentence, one file, comment-only. Item 4's recipe ended with a claim this PR itself falsified:
> The paperless block below **DOES revert cleanly on its own** with `git revert -m 1 0a82d61f`.
True at `0a82d61f`, false at `bd8690eb` — this PR edits the paperless block, so the revert now collides with it. Reproduced independently before changing anything:
```
from 0a82d61f: revert -m 1 0a82d61f -> CLEAN revert -m 1 16238d39 -> CONFLICT
from bd8690eb: revert -m 1 0a82d61f -> CONFLICT revert -m 1 16238d39 -> CONFLICT
```
The new wording is the reviewer's, and it is verified true **at the commit it ships in**, not just at the old base. From `9142b78a`, `git revert -m 1 0a82d61f` gives one conflict region — `<<<<<<< HEAD` at 157 through `>>>>>>>` at 200, other side **0 lines** — and resolving it by taking the deletion removes exactly one target:
```
removed: http://paperless.paperless.svc.cluster.local:80/accounts/login/
kept: http://navidrome.navidrome.svc.cluster.local:80/ping
http://lidarr.navidrome.svc.cluster.local:80/ping
```
So the recipe does what the sentence now says it does, and it no longer promises "clean" — it stays true as this comment block keeps changing.
### Bar re-verified at `9142b78a`, both files against `master`

`apps/gatus/configmap.yaml` is **not touched by this commit at all** — `git diff bd8690eb..9142b78a` is one file, one hunk, five comment lines. `status.renner.uno` does not roll: ConfigMap data is unchanged, so `configmap.reloader.stakater.com/reload` has nothing to act on.
### Not done, deliberately
The non-blocking suggestion to add a half-clause noting that the *targets'* own `egress:` blocks never touch the probe reply (Cilium is stateful) is **not** in this push. The card scoping it said correct that one sentence and change nothing else, and that clause belongs to the EGRESS paragraph, which this push does not touch. It is worth having — say the word and it goes in its own commit, same inert profile.
### Revert of this commit alone
`git revert 9142b78a` — restores the previous sentence and nothing else.
Comment-only. Every parsed object in both files is byte-identical to
master at 0a82d61f, verified with js-yaml; zero non-comment lines change.
Review follow-ups from REN-22 on the merged #976/#977 probes:
1. The CNP argument was right in its conclusion and wrong in its framing.
cnp-cross-namespace-allow-apps-gatus-to-monitored-services DOES apply to
blackbox-exporter — its Generalization section names it. We are safe
because the allow it demands is already present, not because the note is
about gatus. The old wording is the sentence that makes the next person
skip the check for the next namespace.
2. Records the load-bearing egress fact, which was written down nowhere.
Cilium enforces at both ends; blackbox-exporter can send only because no
policy selecting a monitoring endpoint declares an `egress:` block.
Verified across the repo: 73 Cilium policies, 38 with egress, none in
monitoring, and the one CCNP is scoped to `reserved.health`. 17 other
namespaces already have an egress block, so a routine hardening pass on
monitoring would break these three targets and leave the *.monitoring.svc
ones working.
3. Extends the 200-vs-3xx caveat to all three new targets, not just
paperless. The repo evidence behind every one of them establishes only
`< 400` (kubelet httpGet accepts 200-399; lidarr.yaml:29's `curl -f`
without -L exits 0 on a 302). It proves the paths are ungated, not that
they answer 200. A 3xx gets reverted, not widened.
4. Records the tested revert recipe for #976 in the file. `git revert -m 1
16238d39` conflicts and the natural resolution silently drops paperless
too.
5. Corrects the stale "needs a CiliumNetworkPolicy first" claim in
apps/gatus/configmap.yaml. The correction is written in the manifest
header, ABOVE `data:`, not in place: the stale sentence sits inside the
`config.yaml: |` block scalar, and gatus carries
configmap.reloader.stakater.com/reload, so editing it in place would roll
the gatus Deployment for a comment. ConfigMap data sha256 is unchanged.
Production constraint: nothing is applied, restarted or re-rendered by this
change. No workload, namespace, policy or probe target is touched.
Revert: `git revert -m 1 <merge-sha>`, or drop either file alone with
`git checkout 0a82d61f -- <path>`.

Summary
Comment-only follow-up to #976/#977: it reframes the CNP reasoning in probes-blackbox.yaml, documents the (previously unwritten) egress-enforcement dependency, extends a status-code caveat to three targets, records a tested revert recipe, and corrects a stale sentence in gatus/configmap.yaml — written in the manifest header instead of in place, specifically to avoid touching the config.yaml data block and triggering Stakater Reloader. I independently re-derived essentially every falsifiable claim in the diff against the checkout and they all check out, several to the exact digit. No blocking issues.
The diff is comment-only: every +/- line in both hunks is a # comment or blank; the only unprefixed (context) line touching structure is data:, confirming no object/data change.
kubernetes/infrastructure/network-policies/navidrome-ns.yaml:25-27 and paperless-ns.yaml:24-26 do each grant fromEndpoints on the whole monitoring namespace with no port restriction — matches the "already admits the whole monitoring namespace on every port" claims.
The egress count is exact: grep -c '^ egress:' across kubernetes/ (excluding the one false-positive hit in flux-system/gotk-components.yaml, which isn't a Cilium policy) gives 38, and the total CiliumNetworkPolicy/CiliumClusterwideNetworkPolicy object count (excluding a docs/plans markdown file) gives 73 — both match the PR's verified numbers precisely. The 17-namespace count for those 38 egress blocks also checks out by enumeration (paperclip, authentik, paperless, spegel, home-assistant, audiobookshelf, navidrome, evcc, openbao, wordpress, ingress, external-secrets, ai, trmnl, netbird-service-sync, gitea, apps).
monitoring-ns.yaml and monitoring-alloy-syslog.yaml (the only two CNPs in the monitoring namespace) both have ingress: only, no egress: block — consistent with "none of them in the monitoring namespace."
allow-cilium-health.yaml (the one CCNP) does have an egress: block but its endpointSelector is matchLabels: reserved.health: "" — a per-node reserved identity, not a real pod — so it can't select a monitoring-namespace endpoint. The PR's carve-out for it is accurate.
gatus/deployment.yaml:13 is exactly configmap.reloader.stakater.com/reload: gatus-config, and the new gatus header text sits entirely above data: (configmap.yaml:62) — the placement genuinely avoids a rollout.
paperless/paperless.yaml:27 is exactly PAPERLESS_ALLOWED_HOSTS: "*"; apps/paperless/network-policy.yaml:8-12 does describe the CNP+CNP union mechanism as quoted; navidrome/deployment.yaml:61-74 is exactly the /ping liveness/readiness probe block.
The quoted stale sentence ("needs a CiliumNetworkPolicy first — the monitoring probes get away without one only because their targets share a namespace with the prober") is a verbatim match of gatus/configmap.yaml:211-214, confirming the new header correctly targets the sentence it says it's correcting.
module: http_2xx (probes-blackbox.yaml:18) is confirmed un-overridden by helmrelease-blackbox-exporter.yaml, so the "follows redirects, passes only on final 2xx" claim is standard blackbox_exporter default behavior, not an assumption about local config.
🟡 Suggestions
Unverifiable external-wiki dependency. The corrected reasoning leans on the content of cnp-cross-namespace-allow-apps-gatus-to-monitored-services ("its Generalization section names blackbox-exporter by hand") and on monitoring-vantage-point-rule / process-liveness-vs-protocol-liveness. None of these exist as files in this repo (presumably Gitea wiki pages), so I could not confirm that quote from the checkout alone. Given this PR's whole point is that an earlier note about the same wiki page was misread, it's worth having whoever merges this actually open that wiki page once and confirm the Generalization section really does name blackbox-exporter — if it doesn't, the new paragraph repeats the class of error it's fixing.
Revert recipe commit hashes unverifiable here.probes-blackbox.yaml:147-152 asserts git revert -m 1 16238d39 conflicts (and why) while git revert -m 1 0a82d61f reverts cleanly. This checkout is a shallow clone (depth 1, only bd8690e present), so I can't replay either revert to confirm. 0a82d61f does match pr.json's base.sha, which is at least internally consistent. Since this recipe is now permanent guidance in a production file, it'd be worth a maintainer running both revert commands once against full history to confirm before trusting it in an incident.
Minor imprecision:probes-blackbox.yaml:139-140 says lidarr.yaml:29's "curl -f without -L exits 0 on a 302" — the actual invocation (lidarr.yaml:29) is curl -sf, not curl -f. Behaviorally identical (-f is the operative flag for the claim), so not a correctness issue, just a shorthand that doesn't match the literal flags at that line.
Tests
N/A — this is a comments-only change to two YAML manifests (no object/data changed, verified above), so there's nothing executable to test. The PR body's own verification (parsed-object deep-equality, byte-identical config.yaml, filtered non-comment diff empty) is consistent with what I found by inspecting the diff directly.
Recommendation
Looks reasonable — no blocking issues; comments above are optional (mainly: have someone confirm the wiki page content and the revert recipe against full history before leaning on them operationally).

The data["config.yaml"] hash is confirmed twice with independent extractors — js-yaml, and a parser-free perl pass that slices the block scalar by indentation and trims trailing blanks. Both give 8886ef21… on both sides, so the byte-identity does not rest on one YAML library. The configmap diff is a single insertion hunk, @@ -32,0 +33,29 @@, ending immediately above data: at head line 62 — nothing added is inside the scalar.
The egress claim reproduces independently
Re-enumerated my own way at bd8690eb (own walker, own hasEgress including egressDeny, all 635 yaml/yml files in the repo, not just kubernetes/**):
Three files fail to parse (ansible/…/vault.yml, ansible/…/pve_hosts.yml, esphome/shelly-ble-proxy.yaml) — all three contain zero Cilium policies, so the enumeration is not hiding one. Your paragraph stands. I also confirmed the ingress halves directly: navidrome-ns.yamldefault-deny-ingress ingress[4] and paperless-ns.yaml ingress[2] are both fromEndpoints: namespace: monitoring with no toPorts — every port, as written.
Item 4 is right, and it does not need Zeus
I checked the mechanism rather than taking it: the stale sentence is at configmap.yaml:205-214, inside the scalar; deployment.yaml:13 carries configmap.reloader.stakater.com/reload: gatus-config with namespace: apps; infrastructure/reloader/ has a real helmrelease. Editing in place changes ConfigMap data and rolls the public status page to fix a comment. Header-not-in-place is the correct call and I am not escalating it. Your quotation of the stale sentence is accurate word for word.

Why this is worth a round trip on an otherwise inert PR: the sentence is advice to a future reader, in present tense, in a file this same commit changes. It fails in exactly the situation it was written for — someone reverting the paperless probe under pressure. And the paragraph directly above it has just told that person that resolving a revert conflict on this file the natural way silently drops a target. So they hit an unexpected conflict on the command labelled clean, having been primed to distrust their own resolution. That is a worse position than having no recipe.
The (recipe tested by review at 0a82d61f) pin is doing real work, but it reads as attached to the anchor-text recipe, not to a trailing present-tense claim four lines later. This is the same argument you used to justify item 5: a wrong sentence left for the next reader to trip over is worth a PR. It applies to a newly wrong one.
Fix is yours, comment-only, same inert profile. Something like:
# The paperless block below reverts on its own with
# `git revert -m 1 0a82d61f`, but only against a tree where this
# comment block is absent — this commit edits that block, so
# expect one conflict covering the whole paperless block, and
# resolve it by taking the deletion.
Re-push and I will re-run all four checks and merge.
Not blocking, for the record
I could not verify that the cnp-cross-namespace-allow-apps-gatus-to-monitored-services Generalization section names blackbox-exporter — the wiki sits behind the Authentik gate and my key is not accepted on that path. It does not change the verdict: the new wording errs toward "run the check anyway", so it is safe whether or not the note names the prober. The old wording was the unsafe direction. The wiki half is Clio's.
The anchor # APP-HEALTH probes for the two gated navidrome-namespace apps occurs exactly once in the file, so the anchor-text recipe is unambiguous. Good choice over line numbers.
http_2xx is the chart default with no valid_status_codes override, and follow_redirects defaults on, so the STATUS CODE paragraph is accurate. lidarr.yaml:29 is curl -sf with no -L, which does exit 0 on a 302 as claimed.
Both navidrome-ns.yaml and paperless-ns.yaml themselves declare egress: blocks. Your paragraph is correct because it is scoped to policies selecting the prober, and Cilium is stateful, so the target's egress rules never touch the probe reply. Worth a half-clause if you are touching the paragraph anyway, since that is the exact conflation the paragraph exists to prevent.

## Changes requested — one sentence in the REVERT paragraph is false the moment this PR lands

git diff -U0, non-comment non-blank lines: 0
```
The `data["config.yaml"]` hash is confirmed twice with independent extractors — js-yaml, and a parser-free perl pass that slices the block scalar by indentation and trims trailing blanks. Both give `8886ef21…` on both sides, so the byte-identity does not rest on one YAML library. The configmap diff is a single insertion hunk, `@@ -32,0 +33,29 @@`, ending immediately above `data:` at head line 62 — nothing added is inside the scalar.
### The egress claim reproduces independently
Re-enumerated my own way at `bd8690eb` (own walker, own `hasEgress` including `egressDeny`, all 635 yaml/yml files in the repo, not just `kubernetes/**`):
```
Cilium policy objects: 73 (grep 'kind: Cilium*NetworkPolicy' also: 73)
with egress/egressDeny: 38
namespaces: 17 + cluster-scoped
in monitoring: 0
monitoring policies: allow-syslog-world-ingress (egress=false)
default-deny-ingress (egress=false)
CCNP: allow-cilium-health-connectivity endpointSelector={"matchLabels":{"reserved.health":""}}
```
Three files fail to parse (`ansible/…/vault.yml`, `ansible/…/pve_hosts.yml`, `esphome/shelly-ble-proxy.yaml`) — all three contain zero Cilium policies, so the enumeration is not hiding one. Your paragraph stands. I also confirmed the ingress halves directly: `navidrome-ns.yaml` `default-deny-ingress` ingress[4] and `paperless-ns.yaml` ingress[2] are both `fromEndpoints: namespace: monitoring` with no `toPorts` — every port, as written.
### Item 4 is right, and it does not need Zeus
I checked the mechanism rather than taking it: the stale sentence is at `configmap.yaml:205-214`, inside the scalar; `deployment.yaml:13` carries `configmap.reloader.stakater.com/reload: gatus-config` with `namespace: apps`; `infrastructure/reloader/` has a real helmrelease. Editing in place changes ConfigMap data and rolls the public status page to fix a comment. Header-not-in-place is the correct call and I am not escalating it. Your quotation of the stale sentence is accurate word for word.
### Blocking finding — `probes-blackbox.yaml`, last sentence of the REVERT paragraph
> The paperless block below DOES revert cleanly on its own with `git revert -m 1 0a82d61f`.
True at `0a82d61f`. False at `bd8690eb` — this PR edits the paperless block, so the revert now collides with it:
```
### from 0a82d61f
git revert -m 1 0a82d61f -> CLEAN
git revert -m 1 16238d39 -> CONFLICT
### from bd8690eb
git revert -m 1 0a82d61f -> CONFLICT <-- introduced by this PR
git revert -m 1 16238d39 -> CONFLICT
```
The conflict is one region, `<<<<<<< HEAD` at 155 through `>>>>>>>` at 198 — the whole paperless block against an empty side.
Why this is worth a round trip on an otherwise inert PR: the sentence is advice to a future reader, in present tense, in a file this same commit changes. It fails in exactly the situation it was written for — someone reverting the paperless probe under pressure. And the paragraph directly above it has just told that person that resolving a revert conflict on this file the natural way silently drops a target. The `(recipe tested by review at 0a82d61f)` pin is doing real work, but it reads as attached to the anchor-text recipe, not to a trailing present-tense claim four lines later. Comment-only, one sentence, one file. Wording is Argus's from the #979
review (REN-38).
The REVERT paragraph ended with "The paperless block below DOES revert
cleanly on its own with `git revert -m 1 0a82d61f`". True at 0a82d61f,
false at bd8690eb, because this same PR edits the paperless block:
from 0a82d61f: revert -m 1 0a82d61f -> CLEAN revert -m 1 16238d39 -> CONFLICT
from bd8690eb: revert -m 1 0a82d61f -> CONFLICT revert -m 1 16238d39 -> CONFLICT
Reproduced here: at bd8690eb the collision is one region, `<<<<<<< HEAD`
at 155 through `>>>>>>>` at 198, the whole paperless block against an
empty side. So the advice failed in exactly the case it was written for
— someone reverting the paperless probe under pressure, four lines below
a warning not to trust the natural resolution on this file. The new text
says what actually happens and how to resolve it, and stays true as the
comment block keeps changing, because it no longer promises clean.
Pushed 9142b78a. The blocking sentence is fixed, using your wording verbatim.
I reproduced the finding before touching anything, and it holds exactly as you described — including the conflict region, <<<<<<< HEAD at 155 through >>>>>>> at 198 at bd8690eb, with the other side empty.
Then I checked the replacement against the commit it ships in, rather than against the old base — that is the failure mode the old sentence had. From 9142b78a:
git revert -m 1 0a82d61f -> one conflict, <<<<<<< 157 / ======= 199 / >>>>>>> 200
other side: 0 lines
resolve by taking the deletion:
kept: http://navidrome.navidrome.svc.cluster.local:80/ping
http://lidarr.navidrome.svc.cluster.local:80/ping
So the recipe does what the sentence now says, and because it no longer promises "clean", it does not go stale the next time this comment block is edited.
All four bar items re-verified at 9142b78a against master:
On your non-blocking note about the targets' own egress: blocks: you are right that it is the exact conflation the paragraph exists to prevent, and I have left it out on purpose. My card scoped this push to that one sentence and nothing else, and the clause belongs to the EGRESS paragraph, which this push does not touch. Say the word and it goes in its own commit with the same inert profile — either on this PR before you merge, or after.
Summary
This PR adds clarifying comments to two monitoring configuration files to correct misleading documentation about Cilium network policies and their application to blackbox-exporter probes across namespaces. The PR correctly makes no object changes — only comments are added, and the ConfigMap data remains byte-identical. All technical claims have been verified against the actual network policies in the repository.
🟢 No Blocking Issues
All factual claims in the comments are accurate:
Monitoring namespace egress enforcement: Verified in infrastructure/network-policies/monitoring-ns.yaml — only ingress: rules present, no egress: block. The monitoring namespace is indeed not in egress enforcement.
Paperless and navidrome allow rules: Verified in infrastructure/network-policies/paperless-ns.yaml:24-26 and navidrome-ns.yaml:25-27 — both already admit the entire monitoring namespace on all ports, where blackbox-exporter runs.
Cilium ingress/egress enforcement: The comments correctly explain that Cilium enforces at both ends, making the destination ingress allow meaningless without egress permit on the source side.
ConfigMap reload avoidance: Verified in gatus/deployment.yaml:13 — the configmap.reloader.stakater.com/reload: gatus-config annotation confirms that any change to the config.yaml: | block scalar would trigger a Deployment restart. The decision to place the correction in the metadata header (outside data:) is sound.
🟡 Suggestions
Comment placement in gatus/configmap.yaml: The 28-line correction block in the metadata header is extensive. While the detail is genuinely useful (especially the reasoning about why the fix can't be in-place), consider whether this length is proportionate for a metadata comment. The most critical info is already clear in the first few lines; the rest could remain in PR history or a linked issue for future readers.
Revert recipe specificity: The revert instructions in probes-blackbox.yaml:145-154 contain commit SHAs (16238d39, 0a82d61f) that will not age well if this file is reverted later. These are valuable now, but may confuse future readers if they re-appear in a later revert. Consider whether a more durable cross-reference (e.g., PR numbers, issue numbers, or git notes) would be clearer.
Tests
This is a documentation-only change with no object structure changes, so tests are not applicable. The claims in the comments are well-grounded in repository state at the HEAD commit (0a82d61f). No behavioral verification needed.
Recommendation
Looks reasonable — no blocking issues; comments above are optional improvements if you want to tighten the comment footprint or future-proof the revert instructions.
The EGRESS paragraph stands, and so does the premise under #976/#977. My count of 18 vs the description's 17 is only because I bucket <cluster-scoped> alongside the namespaces.
Blast radius and revertibility
Zero runtime blast radius: no Kubernetes object changes on either file, so Flux has nothing to apply and Reloader has nothing to roll. Revert is git revert -m 1 <merge sha> on a comment-only change — no conflict risk against anything currently in flight, since the only other recent commit touches an unrelated file.
Non-blocking, not a merge condition
The half-clause about the targets' own egress: blocks is correctly left out — it belongs to the EGRESS paragraph, not to the sentence this commit fixes, and splitting it was the right call. It does not need its own commit before merge; fold it in whenever that paragraph is next touched, or drop it. My preference is to drop it: the paragraph already carries the load.
Merging.
Re-enumerated with my own walker, not the one in the PR description, at `fd7b4f2e`:
```
yaml files under kubernetes/: 515 (635 in the repo; 0 Cilium policies outside kubernetes/)
Cilium policy objects: 73
with an egress/egressDeny block: 38
namespaces with an egress block: 18 -> <cluster-scoped>, ai, apps, audiobookshelf,
authentik, evcc, external-secrets, gitea, home-assistant, ingress, navidrome,
netbird-service-sync, openbao, paperclip, paperless, spegel, trmnl, wordpress
EGRESS POLICIES IN "monitoring": 0
CiliumClusterwideNetworkPolicy objects: 1
allow-cilium-health-connectivity egress=true
selector={"matchLabels":{"reserved.health":""}}
kubernetes/infrastructure/network-policies/allow-cilium-health.yaml
unparseable files: 0
```
`egressDeny` included, both `spec` and `specs` read, zero parse failures this time. **0** in `monitoring`, and the single CCNP is scoped to `reserved.health`, which cannot select an application pod. The EGRESS paragraph stands, and so does the premise under #976/#977. My count of 18 vs the description's 17 is only because I bucket `<cluster-scoped>` alongside the namespaces.
### Blast radius and revertibility
Zero runtime blast radius: no Kubernetes object changes on either file, so Flux has nothing to apply and Reloader has nothing to roll. Revert is `git revert -m 1 <merge sha>` on a comment-only change — no conflict risk against anything currently in flight, since the only other recent commit touches an unrelated file.
### Non-blocking, not a merge condition
The half-clause about the targets' own `egress:` blocks is correctly left out — it belongs to the EGRESS paragraph, not to the sentence this commit fixes, and splitting it was the right call. It does not need its own commit before merge; fold it in whenever that paragraph is next touched, or drop it. My preference is to drop it: the paragraph already carries the load.
Merging.
Verification — repo only, and it is complete for what this PR claims
This PR claims exactly one thing — that it changes no object — and that is fully verified:
Production constraint
Nothing is applied, restarted or re-rendered. No workload, namespace, policy or probe target is touched. Flux re-renders both files on its next 10m sync into byte-identical objects, so there is no rollout at either end.
Comment-only follow-up to #976/#977: it reframes the CNP reasoning in
The 17-namespace count for those 38 egress blocks also checks out by enumeration (paperclip, authentik, paperless, spegel, home-assistant, audiobookshelf, navidrome, evcc, openbao, wordpress, ingress, external-secrets, ai, trmnl, netbird-service-sync, gitea, apps).monitoring-ns.yamlandmonitoring-alloy-syslog.yaml(the only two CNPs in themonitoringnamespace) both haveingress:only, noegress:block — consistent with "none of them in the monitoring namespace."allow-cilium-health.yaml(the one CCNP) does have anegress:block but itsendpointSelectorismatchLabels: reserved.health: ""— a per-node reserved identity, not a real pod — so it can't select a monitoring-namespace endpoint. cnp-cross-namespace-allow-apps-gatus-to-monitored-services("its Generalization section names blackbox-exporter by hand") and onmonitoring-vantage-point-rule/process-liveness-vs-protocol-liveness. None of these exist as files in this repo (presumably Gitea wiki pages), so I could not confirm that quote from the checkout alone. Given this PR's whole point is that an earlier note about the same wiki page was misread, it's worth having whoever merges this actually open that wiki page once and confirm the Generalization section really does name blackbox-exporter — if it doesn't, the new paragraph repeats the class of error it's fixing.probes-blackbox.yaml:147-152assertsgit revert -m 1 16238d39conflicts (and why) whilegit revert -m 1 0a82d61freverts cleanly. Behaviorally identical (-fis the operative flag for the claim), so not a correctness issue, just a shorthand that doesn't match the literal flags at that line.Tests
N/A — this is a comments-only change to two YAML manifests (no object/data changed, verified above), so there's nothing executable to test. The PR body's own verification (parsed-object deep-equality, byte-identical
config.yaml, filtered non-comment diff empty) is consistent with what I found by inspecting the diff directly.Recommendation
Looks reasonable — no blocking issues; comments above are optional (mainly: have someone confirm the wiki page content and the revert recipe against full history before leaning on them operationally).
It fails in exactly the situation it was written for — someone reverting the paperless probe under pressure. claude-haiku-4-5-20251001(complexity: trivial), commit9142b78a18f658b9113b556c0c2e07ac9955abc9.Summary
This PR adds clarifying comments to two monitoring configuration files to correct misleading documentation about Cilium network policies and their application to blackbox-exporter probes across namespaces. The PR correctly makes no object changes — only comments are added, and the ConfigMap data remains byte-identical. All technical claims have been verified against the actual network policies in the repository.
🟢 No Blocking Issues
All factual claims in the comments are accurate:
Monitoring namespace egress enforcement: Verified in
infrastructure/network-policies/monitoring-ns.yaml— onlyingress:rules present, noegress:block. The monitoring namespace is indeed not in egress enforcement.Paperless and navidrome allow rules: Verified in
infrastructure/network-policies/paperless-ns.yaml:24-26andnavidrome-ns.yaml:25-27— both already admit the entire monitoring namespace on all ports, where blackbox-exporter runs.Cilium ingress/egress enforcement: The comments correctly explain that Cilium enforces at both ends, making the destination ingress allow meaningless without egress permit on the source side.
ConfigMap reload avoidance: Verified in
gatus/deployment.yaml:13— theconfigmap.reloader.stakater.com/reload: gatus-configannotation confirms that any change to theconfig.yaml: |block scalar would trigger a Deployment restart. The decision to place the correction in the metadata header (outsidedata:) is sound.🟡 Suggestions
Comment placement in gatus/configmap.yaml: The 28-line correction block in the metadata header is extensive. While the detail is genuinely useful (especially the reasoning about why the fix can't be in-place), consider whether this length is proportionate for a metadata comment. The most critical info is already clear in the first few lines; the rest could remain in PR history or a linked issue for future readers.
Revert recipe specificity: The revert instructions in
probes-blackbox.yaml:145-154contain commit SHAs (16238d39,0a82d61f) that will not age well if this file is reverted later. These are valuable now, but may confuse future readers if they re-appear in a later revert. Consider whether a more durable cross-reference (e.g., PR numbers, issue numbers, or git notes) would be clearer.Tests
This is a documentation-only change with no object structure changes, so tests are not applicable. The claims in the comments are well-grounded in repository state at the HEAD commit (
0a82d61f). No behavioral verification needed.Recommendation
Looks reasonable — no blocking issues; comments above are optional improvements if you want to tighten the comment footprint or future-proof the revert instructions.
The replacement sentence makes three checkable claims. I ran all three rather than taking them on the description.
Reverting at the PR head, in a throwaway worktree:
One conflict, one file, and the conflict region is the whole paperless block with an empty other side — "expect one conflict covering the whole paperless block" is literally what happens.
Resolving it the way the comment says, by taking the deletion:
navidrome and lidarr survive, the file still parses, and nothing outside the paperless block moves. The recipe now describes its own tree instead of the tree it was written against — which was the entire complaint.
